Portrait Session with Oli

Oli spends some of his time clay pigeon shooting, so it seemed only right to try and obtain some sporting images of him with his shotgun.

We wanted to try and get something a little different so went for the black background to put the emphasis on the subject. One shot that Oli really wanted to try and achieve was the image above of the cartridges being ejected from the barrels after being fired. This is always accompanied by some smoke so I set up the speedlites to ensure some light was coming through the smoke to make it as visible as possible. It was a masterclass of timing and took a few attempts to get the cartridges in the shot and also in the right place.

I also wanted to have the camera attached to the barrel of Oli's gun to try some slow shutter speed shots to blur the background. I was really pleased with the image of Oli moving the gun as though following a target through the air. A burst of flash has rendered Oli sharp but the ground around him has a nice motion blur effect which was exactly what I wanted.

A big thank you to Oli for his patience and enthusiasm in achieving these images, it was great fun.
