Preparing for your Headshot Session

some top tips to consider when preparing for your Headshot Session

Take a few changes of clothing so that your photographer can choose what will work best for you. Keep colours muted, as brightly coloured shirts, blouses, or tops are very distracting. Keep things simple too, nothing too heavily patterned or striped, as this will draw the eye away from what it is you're promoting.....YOU.

Make sure you only take clothes that you love and are comfortable in. If you don't love it, it's probably best to leave it at home.

For women, please also avoid low cut tops, thin straps, or even strapless tops, as it will look like you're not wearing anything in a tight Headshot, and this is not the first impression you want to be giving to potential clients.

Once you've chosen your clothing, it's time to get the iron out and make sure that those creases are gone.

This is another area that needs some consideration. Earrings should be kept small, so stud style is fine, but avoid long dangly earrings and hoops. It's a good idea to remove necklaces as well to keep the attention on you and not what you're wearing. Your Headshot is about creating an impression through your expressions, and obvious jewellery can take the focus away from you.

You don't want your Headshots to be remembered for all the wrong reasons, so keep out of the sun for a few days before your session, as looking sunburnt is not going to encourage potential clients to contact you. Also I would recommend that you avoid any skin treatment before your session.

Hair and makeup

If you feel the need to have a haircut for your new Headshot, have it a few days before the session to give it time to settle in.

As far as makeup is concerned, subtle is always best, so avoid that bright red lipstick and heavy eye makeup. You can always build up the makeup during the session if the need arises, but start off fairly light and natural.

If you would like to have a Hair and Makeup Professional present to help you on the day, ask your photographer if they can book one in for you, but keep in mind that this would incur an additional cost to cover their fee.

For the Men with facial hair it's best kept neat, tidy and well groomed for your session.

If your shoot is after lunch you might like to take a toothbrush to make sure that you don't have a nasty piece of lettuce making an appearance in your shot.

A good nights sleep the night before your shoot is highly recommended, as this will help you to look and feel fresh, as will avoiding a night out on the town.
